“Roots of Education are bitter but the fruit is sweet "a
great quote by Aristotle. But what if the base of education is not made properly?
It is the condition of new education policy 2020 implemented by the government
of India after 34 years. In this article we are focusing about pros and cons of
an NEP on higher education.
There are major challenges that we have to face off with but
the first and foremost is is the language of education we Indians are known for
our coders and software programmer all over the world . It is because we have
familiarity with English language.
But according to this policy English as a medium of teaching
will go out of school. Which will affect us in a long-term?
Another allegations made against the NEP is that it is
promoting a centralization in our education system, that attempts are being made
to centralized it in such a wide nation.
There was a time when the founding fathers had kept education as a state
subject it was put in the concurrent
list in 1976.
According to NEP-2020 all educational institutions will be
governed by the committees constituted by Centre Govt. for different purposes
and all educational institutions have to follow the policies made by them.
As an example if it
look at a country like Canada which also has federalism there is no centralization
of education there so this is believed
to be a blow to our federal structure.
Another allegation clubbed with this is that and it is a
drive towards privatization.
Moving on to the researches in higher education our
statistics have been deteriorating day by day. It is something that the policy
should have focused upon. our neighbor
country China which has dominating us on the basis of research
institution and “Make in China” policies spend is maximum GDP on research
Innovation and higher education but on the other side we talking about becoming
'AATMNIRBHAR' and 'MAKE IN INDIA' falling down the statistics to 0.6%
to 0.06% of GDP.
Then the question
arises - How will it be implemented?. Is there were talks about assigning 6% of
GDP to education in 1984. But the every government who came in power stuck to
their promises of giving 6% of GDP but giving 3% maximum. Then how will it
immediately bump 3% to 6%.
Furthermost perhaps
the biggest issue if the policy is that humongous to brought in. Then why there
is no such kind of debates and discussions on this topic on parliament. Why the
parliament had been entirely bypassed to
bring NEP? This is the point to think about.
Now moving to the pros of NEP.
A lot of things will change right from schooling until
college. Now, you can study majors and minors like in American universities.
There are multiple entry and exit options as well. You could
study in college for one year two year 3 year or also does an extra year
research in college.
You can exit or enter as you like. you would be provided with
different degree. Attention has been given to flexible education and choice of
subject. You could make your education multi-disciplinary.
Finally the most important the top universities of the world
will be allowed to setup campuses in India. This will raise the bar of
competition between Indian institutes and foreign institutes and the quality of
education will definitely improve in India.
so as we know the new education policy is implemented so we
have great challenges to face off with but as the youth of India we will make
sure that the upcoming years will be the
best years in our history of education.
